FOUNTAIN OF SAN TIZIANO

Restoration financed by Industrie Polieco - MPB srl

The fountain was originally in the monastery of Sts Cosmas and Damian, which stood in the area that was later occupied by the "Caserma degli sbirri". In 1298 bishop Berardo Maggi ordered the demolition of the complex in order to enlarge the Broletto to the north.

Duration of restoration: 103 days
The sarcophagus of the 12th century Brescian bishop San Tiziano was used for the basin of the fountain. The marble roof is supported by two columns with corinthian capitals, coming from the monastery itself. The Tagliaferri archive contains a drawing by Antonio Tagliaferri from a sketch by Giovanni Renica of 1834, showing the fountain on the outside wall of the "Caserma degli sbirri"; a photo shows the fountain, which is composed of a basin at ground level, into which flows water from the sarcophagus basin, on which the columns supporting the roof stand.

In redesigning the Piazzetta dell'Albera, now Tito Speri, in 1885, Antonio Tagliaferri decided to move the fountain to the west side of the square, where the monastery had originally stood. Tagliaferri took this opportunity to change the original structure of the fountain: he added to the columns the brackets supporting the roof, had the coat of arms of Brescia frescoed on the back wall, and raised the sarcophagus higher as the source of the water for the basin.

He close the basin at the back by adding a marble slab made to look like the back of the sarcophagus.
