The marble high relief on the lobby wall of the entrance to the Broletto (left-hand side) is framed on either side by pilasters with ionic capitals and depicts Justice.
In the frame below a relief originally representing the lion of St. Mark has now almost completely disappeared. The sculpture has in fact been completely chiselled off and now only the outline of the relief is visible
The work dates almost certainly from the 15th century (1470-75) , the attribution is uncertain, as is its function in that passageway. Its importance, however , is underlined by the presence next to the goddess of the lion of St. Mark: the Serenissima had wanted to "mark" that entrance and that symbol.
This apparently minor work is thus a precious testimony, representing a significant point in the artistic evaluation of the Broletto.
During the initial test cleaning phase the electronic microscope revealed traces of gold; the high relief was thus originally covered with gold leaf, which was quite rare for a sculpture placed on an external wall.
