Drainage for civil use

Underground water infiltrations are responsible of 80% of cracks of buildings, works of art and manufactured articles. However, the worst damages are caused to roads.

Almost all cracks on the road surface are due to water infiltrations resulting in the instability of the underlay supporting the roadbed.

Therefore, all repairs and road patching are useless, if infiltrations are not eliminated, if the underground water is not collected and eliminated by the drainage pipes.

The drainage pipes can and must be installed in a different way and each case must be analysed.
For instance, a highway (or a heavy traffic road) surface is generally composed of a waterproof roadway, roadsides and a central traffic divider which is almost always permeable.

Rainwater, which strains through the permeable surface and is absorbed by the structure supporting the road, will damage the stability of the road itself. In these cases, drainage pipes must be laid longitudinally along the roadway edge and in the centre of the traffic divider (see picture 1).

For this reason, the pipe is installed upstream the road. In case of roads built across the mountainside, partly dugway and partly in relief, the most used technique is the trap drainage where the pipe is installed upstream the road to avoid any infiltration between the waterproof zone and the filling area. (see picture 2).
